Our Tamil driver speaks French as if he is born to it. But we aren’t in France. We are thousands of miles away in the state of Tamil Nadu in India, in a former French colony. Pondicherry is an utterly lovable little city, and not just because of its pretty buildings and promenade, or the large numbers of its populace who still converse in French.There are layers upon layers to its history, since it has been under the influence of the Dutch, French and British powers. All these have resulted in a intriguing mix of townsfolk and architecture — Indians, Europeans, Americans etc.
You see French influence in the pretty streets, the paved avenues and the Creole cuisine served at several eateries. You see the Indian imprint in the world-famous Aurobindo Ashram and the equally famous Auroville, in the temples, attire and, of course, food.
But most impressive of all, beneath the languid air of the city, there is a vibrant and epiphanic meeting of minds in a most poetic way — through its community goodwill, and its cultural events that seem to fill the entire 12 months of any single year. He is an arts enthusiast and owns the Aurodhan Art Gallery adjoining the heritage hotel. Just as we are getting over our amazement at the many astonishing art works on display, including a signed copy of the famous photograph of Steve McCurry’s of the green-eyed Afghan girl, Sharbat Gula, we are invited upstairs for a short music recital.
