Police Presence In Targeted Areas May Cut Down On Crime
JACKSON, Miss. -- It's an old theory, but experts said crime can be reduced in Jackson if a simple concept is implemented. If statistics show crime is happening in a particular location, placing a police officer there will reduce crime dramatically. The concept has already been tried in New York City, and police there say it does reduce crime. "The things that work in New York may or may not work here," said Jackson Police Department Assistant Chief Lee Vance. Since Christmas, Jackson police have investigated at least three shootings near nightclubs. Earlier this month, police arrested a man in connection with a shooting behind Couple's sports bar. Also in February, police arrested Reyes Ortega, who is accused of shooting his ex-girlfriend in the face at the Tropicana nightclub. Witnesses said she refused to dance with him. Undercover FBI agents posing as drug dealers met with the officers at Metrocenter Mall on June 25, 2010, to discuss their protection of a shipment of cocaine they said was coming into Jackson, authorities said. Monyette Quintel Jefferson, 27, Terence Dale Jenkins, 25, and Anthony Ricardo Payne Jr. , 25, have been arrested and are accused of accepting bribes during an undercover FBI operation in 2010, authorities said.
