VideoLAN Releases VLC 2.0.1 with Bugfix and Security Update
A month and 15 million downloads after the milestone release of VLC 2.0.0 version and more than 3 years since its first official release, VideoLAN and the VLC development team released VLC 2.0.1 FINAL, the second version of “Twoflower” and a bugfix release.
The brand new update of the popular cross-platform, open-source media player capable of handling most media formats received different opinions, particularly among those who use Mac when the first version of Twoflower came out. This latest release aims to fix many bugs and nuisance reported over the intervening period.
The most noticeable changes are on the Mac platform. Since the earlier version already boasts new features in the Mac OS X interface as part of its release, version 2.0.1 also has added a few more changes on the Mac OS user interface for more customization options. It adds support for MxPEG files and streams as well as supports – although limited – Blu-ray disc menus. Support for multi-tracked MKV video files has also improved and version 2.0’s glitch auto-detection of ALSA audio channels is also removed. A number of security updates were also included.
VideoLAN VLC MKV Memory Corruption (CVE-2011-0531)
Successful exploitation could cause a memory corruption in a way that will allow an attacker or execute arbitrary code on the target system. A remote attacker may exploit this issue by enticing a target user to open a specially crafted MKV file using an affected version of VLC player.
