You may never put Lumines: ES down
24.05.12
The game itself is simple, and it will feel familiar to anyone who’s ever played Tetris or Chime. Squares fall from the sky, and each square contains four small blocks. The blocks come in two different colors, and, as they fall, you move and rotate the squares, Tetris-style. Your objective is to create two-by-two squares of the same color; when these newly created squares are hit by a “timeline” that moves from left-to-right, they disappear, you score points, and you prevent the entire screen from filling up with disorganized blocks and ending your game.
The basics are easy to get into, and the esthetics and little touches make it hard to put down. Ubisoft, the king of the dance game, backs the entire experience with an absolutely fantastic soundtrack that you’d have no problem listening to in a club, then builds the music into the gameplay. There are more than 30 techno-infused tracks, and each has a subtle effect on the action. Each song is accompanied by a changing color scheme (called a skin), and each skin has its own tempo, changing the speed at which blocks fall and adjusting the pace of the timeline.
