Fugitive Vt. Emu Dodges Wranglers For 5 Weeks

Residents of South Hero, Vt., have been watching the escapades of an elusive emu with great interest as the 150-pound flightless bird has managed to avoid capture for more than a month.

The bird, which resembles an ostrich, escaped from its pen at a local farm five weeks ago and has recently been spotted outside an elementary school, New England Cable News reported.

According to the publication, several attempts have been made to corral the escapee, but she continues on her tour of the Lake Champlain area. The emu is regarded as a domestic animal, so it cannot be hunted.

The owner of the bird has taken out ads in the local classifieds offering to give up the emu -- and its two former companions -- for free to anyone who can catch her.

However, children at the Folsom School in South Hero hope the emu continues to roam free and told NECN that they have adopted the bird as their honorary school mascot.
