"Bayang magiliw, Perlas ng Silanganan Alab ng puso, Sa Dibdib mo'y buhay." The Filipino national anthem swept across Shiley Theater on Saturday evening during the opening act of the Pilipino Culture Night, an event put on by the Filipino Ugnayan Student Organization.
FUSO, an organization intended to promote Filipino culture and awareness, as well as to serve as a locus for cultural issues and outreach at USD, incorporated dance, song and performing arts into the show, even serving authentic Filipino chicken empanadas during the intermission.
Sophomore and FUSO Community Liaison Hector Ramos explained that the event named was inspired by cultural roots. "FUSO stands for ‘Filipino Ugnayan Student Organization' but our annual event is called PCN, ‘Pilipino Cultural Night,' and the ‘p' instead of ‘f' is more of a way to illustrate that our showcase is about respecting our roots from the Philippines.
