Hiking in the hottest, driest, lowest national park
What's a hiking club doing in a place described in terms of extremes -- inhuman, alien, haunting, unforgiving? A place where site names such as Furnace Creek, Funeral Mountains, Coffin Peak, Badwater Basin and Devil's Golf Course seem designed to scare you off?
I've hiked in cool, coastal England and Scotland; among cave paintings in France; through the rolling hills of Tuscany; in the primordial forests of Olympic National Park; and along creek beds and waterfalls in Yosemite. In all of these places I've been surrounded by every shade of green imaginable and I've loved it.
But never have I wandered sculpted canyons, volcanic hills, shifting sand dunes, badlands and cracked, bleached salt flats, areas where the color wheel hardly moves from brown and gray. I've never ventured into an area whose name is Death Valley.
Olympic National Park's Kalaloch Lodge Gets New Concessionaire ...
In a bit of a surprise, the National Park Service has awarded Delaware North the concessions contract for facilities in the Kalaloch area of Olympic National Park . The 10-year contract includes operation of Kalaloch Lodge in addition to food and... The new concessionaire -- DNC Parks & Resorts at Kalaloch -- will succeed ARAMARK Parks & Destinations, which operates most of the other concession services in Olympic National Park. Although numerous park properties have been subject to multiple contract extensions until a final proposal is rendered, the Kalaloch contract extensions seemed to be in an orbit of their own. ARAMARK commenced operations at Kalaloch in 1989, when the contract was transferred from then-concessionaire, Kalaloch Lodge, Inc. In the last several years ARAMARK has won the concessions at Lake Crescent Lodge and Sol Duc Hot Springs, both of which are major facilities inside the park....
