One December day, Paul and Linda Nezbeth came home to an unusual message on their answering machine. It was from Bedford County Sheriff Michael Brown, alerting the Nezbeths that there had been some break-ins in their Goodview neighborhood. It had been sent through the county's Reverse 911 system.
"I didn't realize they could do that," said Linda Nezbeth. "I thought it was a fantastic way of getting in touch."
The sheriff's department didn't stop at alerting, however. Jeff Johnson, Bedford County's E-911 manager, said the department also used the system to organize a Neighborhood Watch, which has been meeting at Goodview Baptist Church.
"They had a great response," he said. "Normally, they get 20 or 30 people at one of these meetings, and I think they had a couple hundred."
Johnson said he attributes the turnout to the Reverse 911 system. Nezbeth said it was the impetus for her and her neighbors to get to know one another, establish a phone tree for emergencies and to help "pardon the pun, take a bite out of crime."
