Even once we were married and more opportunities to buy art came around, it still took me a minute. Because there’s no purpose to a piece other than to look at it, so some might argue that doesn’t justify a purchase. Once I cleared the hurdle and started maybe buying a couple little pieces, I got such a gratifying feeling, and once I started putting it up on my wall it activated it."Jose's presence as an artist in the community makes it somewhat easier for him to obtain art, not just because he can facilitate art trades, but also because he feels a certain connection to pieces beyond their aesthetic appeal--they are made by his friends and colleagues. This personal relationship to the pieces in his home was what really stood out to me, but one doesn't have to be an artist to have this experience. The pieces made by his daughters and grandfather didn't cost a penny, and they were just as valuable to Jose as his more expensive pieces. What seemed to make Jose's collection special was that he translated this kind of personal touch to buying original art worth hundreds thousands of dollars.
