IBM: Big Transformation + Big Data = Big Returns
Over the past decade, International Business Machines ( IBM ) has undergone one of the most impressive business transitions in history, transforming from a provider of discrete hardware products to a critical supplier of integrated business solutions. In fact, IBM has continually reinvented itself over the past 100 years, dating back to the early days of its founder Thomas Watson, Sr.
At the height of the technology stock bubble IBM generated over 40% of revenue (2000) from hardware products. Many of these were breakthrough technologies invented or pioneered at IBM. However, some had become commodities with very low, and occasionally negative, profit margins. As a result, IBM made a series of bold decisions to transform itself by exiting some of these previously core businesses, including memory chips (1999), disk drives (2002), PCs (2005) and printers (2007). Today, IBM's hardware segment, which primarily consists of servers and mainframes, represents less than 20% of total revenue.
