MusiCares providing help for musicians with financial needs

Far from the glamor of the Grammy Awards stage and the recording studios of New York, Hollywood and Nashville, many musicians and their colleagues are struggling with the economic fallout of the recession and the financial drain caused by illegal downloads.
In the Berkshires, the vibrant music community has taken a severe hit. In an effort to help performers, songwriters, recording engineers and others in the industry, MusiCares -- a charitable foundation of the Recording Academy, which awards the Grammys each year -- is reaching out to those in need of a financial lifeline or help with addiction issues.
It provides grants totaling more than $3 million across the country to an average of 2,700 qualifying applicants each year.
Dee Dee Acquisto, senior director of health and human services for MusiCares, wants area musicians to know that assistance is available.
