Hoping to whittle down annual operating losses of nearly $10 million a year at the public hospital in Belle Glade, the Palm Beach County Health Care District is planning to send uninsured patients a discount offer next week, if only they will pay their bills promptly.
Since 2004, the public has paid $41.4 million to subsidize the hospital. Bad debt is at least $17 million of that.
"We will offer you 30 percent off if you pay your entire bill within 30 days," Holly Vath, the district's chief financial officer, said Wednesday at an audit committee meeting.
But with nearly half the people in Lakeside Medical Center's key service area earning less than $25,000 a year, the odds of the new strategy bringing in much cash appear slim. If the uninsured ignore the discount offer, their bills will be sent for collection as usual, at the full amount due, district spokeswoman Robin Kish said. One of every five patients walking through the hospital's doors is uninsured.
