Children's medical staff have exotic blast

What a scene at the Winnipeg Squash Club on Friday night! Men in swami hats and genie pants, with women in jewels and glittering saris, stepped out of fancy cars and taxis. On the other hand, Hollywood "stars" in diamonds and cocktail dresses were also arriving with cool guys in sunglasses and black suits channelling their inner Tom Cruises.

It was the third annual soiree put on by the doctors of the Children's Hospital surgical unit honouring everyone connected with what they do there -- from docs to nurses to people who clean the operating rooms. Inside, they walked the red carpet, with cameras flashing and 40-inch screens showing Bollywood movies and presentations of Oscars. Later, Barry Kay and his Cherry Tree Productions streamed the local red-carpet guests in place of the Academy Award winners, as 120 people danced the night away.

Dr. Lonny Ross and Dr. David Lambert were the originators of this party three years ago, but now more than a dozen doctors have supported the celebration, financially as well. Says Ross: "It's a social atmosphere where you can buy someone a drink and get to know about their lives. There's lot of goodwill and it's really caught on. We're a brotherhood and sisterhood of people working at this place." Adds Lambert, who wore a giant swami hat, balloon pants and a stunning vest for the night: "Everyone anticipates the party for weeks beforehand and then there's the party itself, and afterwards everything goes so smoothly around work, it's like silk."
