The Gonski Report - Australia reviews its education system
19.05.12
The Australian government has released a major review of the country's education system.
The Gonski report, as it's known, has recommended a major overhaul of government funding for Australian schools, to address the decline in students' achievement levels when compared to international standards over the past decade.
The review also called for funding to be increased across all school sectors - a plan that would cost federal and state governments around 5 billion dollars.
But the debate over the future of Australia's schooling system was overshadowed by leadership rumblings which hit fever pitch in Canberra today.
Speculation has intensified that the Australian Foreign Minister and former Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, will challenge current PM Julia Gillard to lead the party to the next election.
